The Archdiocese of Dublin has released details of the ceremonies for Holy Week 2017. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin, will lead several of the services throughout the archdiocese, including the fifteenth annual Good Friday Way of The Cross procession in Phoenix Park.
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will celebrate the Chrism Mass in Saint Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, on Holy Thursday at 10.00am, joined by priests of each of the 199 parishes in the archdiocese. During the Mass, priests of the Archdiocese will renew their vows of service and Holy Oils used in Sacraments for the coming year will be blessed. Music will be provided by the Palestrina Choir.
The Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be celebrated in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral at 6.00pm on Holy Thursday, led by Archbishop Martin. The Mass will include the Washing of the Feet and will be followed at 7.30pm by the Liturgy of the Hours, and Night Prayer, with the Lamentations of Jeremiah (Tallis) sung by the Gentlemen of The Palestrina Choir.
On Good Friday, 14 April, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will lead the Way of the Cross in Phoenix Park, one of the largest gatherings of the weekend. The procession will begin at 12.00 noon at the Wellington Monument and will continue to the Papal Cross.
On Good Friday evening, Church of Ireland Archbishop Michael Jackson will join Archbishop Martin in leading an ecumenical procession, carrying the Cross Taizé from Christchurch to the Pro-Cathedral. The procession will begin with a moment of prayer at Christchurch at 7.15pm and conclude with prayer around the Cross at the Pro Cathedral.
Archbishop Diarmuid Martin will celebrate Mass on Easter Sunday morning, 16 April, at 11.00am in St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral. Easter Sunday Masses will also be celebrated in the Pro Cathedral at 9.30am, 12.45pm and 6.30pm.
Several parishes in the archdiocese will host Dawn Masses on Easter Sunday:
- St Fintan’s parish in Sutton will celebrate an Easter Sunrise Ecumenical Prayer Service Howth Summit. People are invited to assemble in the car park at 6.15am and breakfast will be served afterwards in St Fintan’s Pastoral Centre.
- The parishes of Bray also have a 6.00am Ecumenical Prayer Service on Bray Head on Easter Sunday, assembling beforehand in the car park of Our Lady Queen of Peace, Putland Road.
- In Maynooth Parish on Easter Sunday, parishioners will meet at The Harbour, Maynooth at 6 am to await in prayer the rising of the sun. Music for the early Morning Prayer service will be led by the Church Folk Group.
