Bishop Noel Treanor to speak at Ecumenical Service for Pentecost Sunday in Clogher Diocese

by | 24 May, 2017 | News

The annual Clogher Diocese joint ecumenical service for Pentecost Sunday will take place this year Saint Sillian’s Church, Tyholland, Co Monaghan on Sunday 4 June.

The service will be jointly led by Church of Ireland Bishop of Clogher, Bishop John McDowell, and Monsignor Joseph McGuiness, Administrator of the Diocese of Clogher and of the parish of Tyholland, together with local clergy.

Bishop Noel Treanor, Bishop of Down and Connor and a native of Tyholland, will address the gathering. During the service, two young people of the parish will give their reflections on Pentecost, and music will be provided by local musicians. Refreshments will be offered afterwards in the Tyholland Community Centre.

The origins of the Christian community of Tyholland can be traced to the fifth century, the time of Saint Patrick. Scholars of the period and of Irish saints point to an account in the Tripartite Life of Saint Patrick in which they tell us: “Patrick came to Teach Taláin, now Tehallan [or Tyholland], where he left a bishop named Cillín and other followers”. (Ó Ríain, Dictionary of Irish Saints, 2011). The present church of Saint Sillian’s dates back to the late 1700s.

The Day of Pentecost marks the end of the fifty-day season of Easter. Moreover, it marks the descent of the Holy Spirit in the upper room and the beginning of apostolic preaching, thus marking a defining moment in the origin of the Christian Church.

All are welcome to attend the ecumenical service.
