Pope John Paul II Award marks 10th anniversary with day of celebration at Knock Shrine

The Pope John Paul II Award will mark its 10th anniversary with a special day of celebration at Knock Shrine on Wednesday, 5 April. The day will celebrate the achievements of all those who have participated in the Award and the thousands who have received the Award over the past ten years.

The day-long event will begin will begin at 10:30am with a gathering at the Papal Cross, followed by a diocesan procession to the Basilica. The celebration programme will include songs, prayer and discussions, with music on the day provided by Niamh McGlinchey. Guest speakers at the event will include Elma Walsh, mother of the late Donal Walsh. The day will conclude with Mass in Knock Basilica at 3pm.

The Pope John Paul II Award was created to commemorate Saint John Paul II, who visited Knock Shrine in 1979. The Award celebrates young people who take an active part in the life of their parish, in the life of their community and in society.

Launched in the Diocese of Derry in November 2006 by Papal Nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Giuseppe Lazzarotto, the Pope John Paul II Award is now active in 24 dioceses throughout Ireland and in Britain, and has been received by over 20,000 participants.

All participants, both past and present, along with parish leaders, school principals and award leaders, are welcome to join in the celebrations.
