Staff at St. Mary’s Pro Cathedral in Dublin are urging people not to exchange unwanted Christmas gifts this week – but to donate them to Crosscare who will give them to those most in need, families, young people living on the margins of life in Dublin and the homeless.
The theme of Pope Francis’ annual Christmas Day “Urbi et Orbi” Message is “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light”.
The Christmas Night liturgy in St Peter’s Basilica began with the chanting of the Kalenda, the proclamation of historic events leading up to Jesus’ birth. Immediately afterwards, the Pope unveiled the image of the Christ Child at the foot of the altar.
The hour long celebration of faith will start at 3.30pm on New Year's Day. Music will be performed by the Charles Wood Singers and the Ulster Orchestra.
