All welcome to ’24 Hours for the Lord’ in Limerick Diocese

Saint Augustine’s Church in Limerick will be at the centre of a round-the-clock procession of the faithful this weekend as part of Pope Francis’ Lenten initiative ’24 hours for the Lord’. The O’Connell Street Church will be the Limerick venue for what will be a global vigil as Catholic faithful across the world respond to Pope Francis’ ‘call to mercy’.

The event surprised organisers 12 months ago as hundreds turned up through the day and, indeed, night to celebrate confession and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.

This year the invitation is redoubled, not least with Pope Francis having dedicated 2016 as a Year of Mercy and urged people to experience God’s grace through the sacraments, especially confession.  This is the first major event in Limerick as part of the calendar year to mark the ‘Year of Mercy’.

Looking ahead to the commencement of ’24 Hours for the Lord’, Limerick Diocese Father Paul Finnerty said, “Last year surprised us all as we had people coming in the doors of St. Augustine’s throughout the day and even the night.  This time around, given that we are in the ‘Year of Mercy’, we are expecting even more people to join us,”   he said.

The 24 Hours  for the Lord in Limerick will begin with Mass celebrated by Father Tony O’Riordan, SJC on Friday 4 March at 4.00pm and conclude with Mass for the Sick, celebrated by Bishop Emeritus Donal Murray at 3.00pm on Saturday.  In between the various liturgies there will be Eucharistic Adoration, with priests available for confession.

All are welcome to participate in this initiative.  Further information available on: www.limerickdiocese.org
