Archbishops Eamon Martin, Archbishop of Armagh, and Diarmuid Martin, Archbishop of Dublin, gathered today, 8 April, at the Archbishop’s House in Drumcondra, to welcome the publication of the new Apostolic Exhortation by Pope Francis Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love: On Love in the Family).
Speaking at the gathering, Archbishop Diarmuid Martin asked for patience with the text, as it will be difficult “to do justice to such a lengthy and complex document in one sweep”. He insisted, however, that Pope Francis’ reflections are “simple, moving, original, and strong”. He added that there is “nothing absolutist in this document. The Pope is reflecting and doesn’t come to narrow conclusions”.
Archbishop Eamon Martin complimented Amoris Laetitia as “grounded in the realities of family life” and faithful to the discussions of the Synod on the Family. The Archbishop described the document as “original and extraordinarily pastoral” with a core message of integration and inclusivity. Through this text, Archbishop Eamon Martin said, “Pope Francis shows he has a real sense of the struggles faced by families in a rushed world”. The Church is now asked to “go out and bring the gospel to where people are”.
