This year’s Assume Summer Camps began their first week today at the Greenhill Centre, Newcastle, Co. Down. The camp will take place on three separate weeks and is open to all 12 – 14 year olds. The dates for the Summer camps are 10 – 14 August (week 1), 14 – 18 August (week 2) and 18 – 22 August (week 23).
A joint project from the Armagh Diocesan Youth Commission and Clogher don Óige, the Assume Summer Camps idea was inspired by the great outdoors and facilities on offer at the Greenhill Centre in Co. Down witnessed during a leadership development course. The aim of the camp is to provide opportunities for boys and girls aged 12 –14 to come together, have fun, make friends and to grow in faith.
The Summer camp enables young people to participate in workshops, games, outdoor activities and Mass at the YMCA centre. Each day, young people participate in faith-based activities around the themes of the Parables, Journey and Mary. While at the camp young people will take part in prayer and outdoor activates, including bouldering, zip-lines, highrope courses, lazer tag, archery, nightline and canoeing. Over the week the young people grow in faith by learning about the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 15 August, and explore their faith in an open Q & A session with a local priest, organising and participating and singing in vibrant youth-led Masses. The Assume Summer camps allow young people to see their faith in a different light, one that is enjoyable, accessible and something to be proud of.
