Charity cycle begins to raise funds for the Capuchin Day Centre’s hot meal service for the poor and homeless

One hundred cyclists departed today from Bow Street, outside the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin city centre, in order to complete a two-day cycle of 350km across the breadth of Ireland to Belmullet in Co Mayo.  Known as the ‘Cycle for Brother Kevin’ this community-driven cycle trip is being undertaken up to raise funds for the Christian mission and work of the Capuchin Day Centre.

Today the cyclists are traveling 180km through Maynooth, Mullingar and Longford, finishing for the night in Drumshambo, Co Leitrim.  Tomorrow, the final day, covers the final 170km and arrives in Belmullet at approximately 6.00pm.

‘The Cycle for Brother Kevin’ was first established as ‘The Great Escape’ in 2010 by friends Fergal Flynn and Paul Kelly.  Both had a keen interest in cycling, an awareness of the excellent work of the Capuchins in the Day Centre, and in the town of Belmullet.  What started as an informal group of six cyclists in 2010 has now grown into a larger successful event, limited to one hundred cyclists in 2016, with the ultimate aim of raising more funds for the Day Centre.

Established in 1969 by Brother Kevin Crowley OFMCap, the Capuchin Day Centre is situated adjacent to the Church of Saint Mary of the Angels, and the Capuchin Friary, on Church Street in Dublin city centre.  Each day the centre serves approximately 300 hot breakfasts and 500 dinners to individuals and families in need, and all are welcome.   The catering staff of the Day Centre is supported by voluntary workers, including by some transition year students from secondary schools.

For more information on the centre see www.capuchindaycentre.ie.  To support the cycle, you can donate €2 by texting HOPE to 50300.
