Ecumenical Bible Week 2017 begins this Pentecost Sunday, 4 June, and will continue until Trinity Sunday, 11 June. This year’s theme will be “Faith Comes by Hearing the Word of Christ.” (Rom 10:17) and events will have a particular focus on the fifth centenary celebrations of the Reformation.

Now in its fourth year, Ecumenical Bible Week is a major ecumenical initiative led by the Archdiocese of Dublin and Church of Ireland United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough, along with other Christian Churches in Dublin. This year there will be 23 separate events taking place throughout Dublin and Wicklow, including debates, discussions, talks, and music.

The week will open with a Holden Evening Prayer in Lutherhaus, Adelaide Road, Dublin 2, at 7.30pm on Sunday 4 June. The event will see Lutheran Vespers sung with music by Marty Haugen, directed by Ian Callanan.

As part of the week, a special Pentecost Schools Project will take place in Ballyfermot and Chapelizod schools. Pupils will learn the stories of Acts using various creative media and will create a printed booklet. A launch and presentation night will take place on Tuesday 6 June at 7.00pm in Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, Ballyfermot.

One of the key events during the week will be the 2017 Symposium, which will take place from 2.00pm to 5.00pm on Friday 9 June at the Holy Cross Diocesan Centre, Clonliffe Road, Dublin. Prof. Tony Lane will open the Symposium with a discussion of the agreed statement on justification, signed by the World Lutheran Federation and the Catholic Church, followed by a presentation by Prof. Salvador Ryan, “How should we remember the Reformation?” Church of Ireland Archbishop Michael Jackson will chair discussions at the Symposium.

Online registration is required to attend the 2017 Symposium.

Following the Symposium, the Thinking Allowed event will begin at 7.30 pm, offering reflections from four different traditions on the question: “Is the Reformation over?”

The week will close on Sunday 11 June with a viewing of BBC film Martin Luther: Heretic in Lutherhaus, Adelaide Road, at 7.30pm, with discussion afterwards led by biblical scholar Father Keiran O’Mahony OSA.
