Father Liam Lawton’s new Mass will be performed for the first time on Thursday 16 March, the eve of the Feast of Saint Patrick, by the combined choirs of Saint Clare’s Church, Graiguecullen, Carlow. The Mass of Saint Patrick was launched at the Los Angeles Religious Education Conference at the Anaheim Convention Centre, LA on Friday 24 February.

Father Liam Lawton is a priest of the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin and a renowned composer of liturgical music. Father Lawton was commissioned to write The Mass of Saint Patrick to mark the Octo Centenary Celebration of Ballintubber Abbey, Co. Mayo, where tradition has it that Saint Patrick baptised people in 441 AD. It is from here that pilgrims set out to make the Pilgrim Route that would eventually take them up Croagh Patrick.

Bishop Denis Nulty, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin will be the chief celebrant of the Mass which takes place at 7.30pm at Saint Clare’s Church, Graiguecullen, Carlow. The choir will be joined by a host of traditional Irish musicians for the Mass.

Composed in melodic and accessible form for choirs (Soprano Alto and Men) the Mass setting includes piano accompaniment, guitar chords and notation for C Instrument and is beautifully arranged by Paul Tate who previously collaborated with Father Lawton on The Glendalough Mass.

The Mass setting is published by GIA Music.

The artwork used on the Mass book visual is taken from a mosaic by Mark Rupnik SJ, which features Saint Patrick and can be seen in the chapel of the Pontifical Irish College in Rome.

A series of workshops based on the new Mass setting will be held nationwide over the coming months. For more information see www.kandle.ie.
