by | 9 Aug, 2017 | News

This week Trócaire will host it’s annual human rights talks in association with the Belfast and Derry Féiles. This year’s talks will be on the theme ‘Gaza on the brink’. 2017 marks 50 years of occupation of the Palestinian territory and 10 years of closure in Gaza and the talks will highlight the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.

The first talk will take place today 9 August at 6.00pm at Saint Mary’s University College Belfast as part of the Féile an Phobail in Belfast. The second talk will be held at the Gasyard Development Trust in Derry at 1.00pm on Thursday 10 August.

This year’s talks will be led by Tania Hary who works for one of Trócaire’s partners in the region, GISHA Legal Centre for Freedom of Movement. GISHA is an Israeli human rights organisation, which works in partnership with colleagues on the ground in Gaza; to protect the right to freedom of movement, especially for Palestinian residents of the Gaza Strip, through individual legal assistance, legal and public advocacy.

Trócaire has worked in Israel and Palestine since 2002 to support those affected the conflict and to help raise international awareness of the ongoing situation. Trócaire also provide humanitarian aid including medical supplies food and blankets. Trócaire’s latest project in Gaza aims to aid women and children in the region by providing legal and mental health support and an emergency counselling helpline.
