Irish Church Music Association summer school concludes in Maynooth

The Irish Church Music Association’s 48th summer school concluded last Saturday in Saint Patrick’s College Maynooth. This year’s summer school saw more than 200 people from across Ireland taking part in workshops from parish cantor training to learning the music from contemporary Irish Church music composers.

The theme for this year’s summer school was Joy for the World, a theme chosen as a reminder of the calling of Christians to bring joy to the world. The theme was also inspired by the World Meeting of Families 2018 theme ‘The Gospel of the Family, Joy for the World’.

This year’s music team included Orla Barry who was guest director and who led several music rehearsals to prepare participants for the various liturgies that were part of the summer school. The music team this year also featured Ephrem Feeley, Father Liam Lawton, Sharon Lyons, Derek Mahady, Columba McCann OSB and Bernard Sexton.

The World Meeting of Families featured prominently at this year’s summer school with Father Timothy Bartlett, WMOF2016 Secretary General, delivering a workshop. The official hymn ‘A Joy For All The Earth’  was also included as part of the liturgies at the summer school with its composer Ephrem Feeley leading two workshops.

This year’s Summer School was well attended by young people who were particularly interested in the tutorial on playing the organ and the New Generation Youth Choir, that features each year at the school.

A new feature at this year’s summer school was a dedicated structured dialogue session so that those involved in music ministry could have time to share ideas, concerns and to learn from each other.
