Newbridge Parish to remember 1916 with Prayer for Peace Service on 24 April

Newbridge Parish, in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighton, will mark the exact date of the centenary of the 1916 Rising with a ,Prayer for Peace Service, in Saint Conleth’s Parish church on Sunday 24 April at 8.00pm.

The ceremony on Sunday will include a solemn procession of Irish, UN, Papal and Parish flags. There will be hymns and some reflective music as well as a reading of extracts from the final messages and letters of the seven signatories of the proclamation.

Third class pupils from the local Patrician Primary School will perform a short dramatic presentation related to 1916.

During the service prayers will be offered for all the deceased (volunteers, civilians, members of DMP, British Army and RIC members).

A spokesperson for the parish said that  Sunday’s event “is an opportunity for the people of Newbridge to remember in a prayerful and respectful way all those who lost their lives during Easter Week 1916, and those who were executed in May of the same year”.

“All are welcome to attend the event which which promises to be a memorable and spiritual occasion in Newbridge Parish”, the spokesperson said.
