Pope Francis has appointed Monsignor John Kennedy, a priest of the Archdiocese of Dublin, to oversee the disciplinary section of the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Forty-nine-year-old Monsignor Kennedy trained for the priesthood at Clonliffe College in Dublin. He was ordained in 1993 and is a graduate of University College Dublin. He served in parishes in Crumlin and Francis Street in Dublin before undertaking postgraduate studies in Canon Law in Rome in 1998.

He began his service with the Holy See in September 2002 under the then Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI.

Until this week’s appointment Monsignor Kennedy was an assistant to the previous head of the section, Father Miguel Funes Diaz.
