Pope Francis calls for a Day of Prayer for Congo and South Sudan

by | 19 Feb, 2018 | News

Pope Francis has launched a special Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace for war-torn nations, in particular for the Democratic Republic of Congo and for South Sudan that are suffering protracted conflict, and he has invited all men and women, regardless of their religious denomination, to join. The Day of Prayer will take place this Friday 23 February.

Addressing the crowds gathered in Saint Peter’s Square on the first Sunday of February, Pope Francis said, ‘Faced with the tragic protracted situations of conflict in different parts of the world, I invite all the faithful to take part in a special Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace on 23 February, the Friday of the First Week of Lent.’

Pope Francis said that prayers and fasting should be offered especially to those suffering violence in the DRC and in South Sudan.

The Holy Father said ‘everyone, in their own consciences, before God, should ask “what can I do for peace?”

‘Surely, we can pray but not only: each one of us can say ‘no’ to violence in their own way, because victories obtained through violence are false victories, while working for peace benefits all.’

Pope Francis continued, ‘I also invite non-Catholic and non-Christian brothers and sisters to join us this initiative in whatever ways they deem most appropriate.’

The Day of Prayer and Fasting for Peace will be marked in dioceses and parishes across Ireland this Friday.
