The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, has appointed Professor Gerard Gillen, Titular Organist of the Pro-Cathedral, to the new nine-person board of the National Concert Hall.

This is the first board to be appointed since legislation was passed to place the National Concert Hall on a statutory footing.

Gerard Gillen has been Titular Organist of Dublin’s Pro-Cathedral since 1976 and is Professor Emeritus of Music at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, where he was Head of Department from 1985 to 2007. He is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s leading church and concert organists.

Professor Gillen has given over 900 recitals throughout Europe, Israel, and America, performing in venues such as the Royal Festival Hall, London, King’s College, Cambridge, and Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris.

He was also organist at the Statio Orbis Mass of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress held in Croke Park, Dublin on 17 June 2012.
Professor Gillen was also founder of the Dublin International Organ & Choral Festival (now ‘Pipeworks’), of which he was artistic director from 1990-2000.

From 1993 to 2014 he was Chair of the Irish Episcopal Commission’s Advisory Committee on Church Music. In 1984 he was conferred with a Knighthood of St. Gregory (KCSG) by the Vatican.
