Mullingar Parish, in the Diocese of Meath, celebrated a special 1916 commemorative Mass in the Cathedral of Christ the King on Sunday 24 April, the centenary date of the 1916 Easter Rising. Bishop Michael Smith invited all to attend to “remember the past and pray for a peaceful future.”

The Mullingar Town Band, local scouts and the veterans’ association, as well as relatives of local 1916 Easter Rising participants, all took part in the celebration.

Speaking ahead of the Mass, Father Paul Crosbie said “The celebration of a Commemoration Mass is very much in keeping with the deep faith of the 1916 leaders.

“Each of the leading features had a personal story of faith which accompanied them along their journey. I think it’s fair to say that they would want us to tap into our faith now as we set out our hopes and dreams for our country at this beginning of a new century of Irish freedom”
