The Pontifical University at Saint Patricks College, Maynooth, recently announced the ‘Cardinal Tomas Ó Fiaich scholarships’ for Northern Ireland undergraduate students. These scholarships will be offered for the academic year 2019-2020.

The scholarships are aimed at facilitating students from Northern Ireland to undertake a Bachelor of Arts programme at Ireland’s largest Faculty of Theology.

The five scholarships will include an award of €1,500, and the offer of campus accommodation.

Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich represents a tradition of intellectual and academic excellence across the island of Ireland. Born in County Armagh, the much loved late Cardinal held the seat of Professor of Modern Irish History at Saint Patrick’s College from 1959 to 1974. After a short period as President of the College, he became Archbishop of Armagh in 1977 until his untimely death while on pilgrimage to the Marian Shrine of Lourdes in 1990, aged just 66.

The Chancellor of Saint Patrick’s College, Archbishop Eamon Martin, in welcoming this announcement, said: “It is a great honour to launch such an innovative scheme. It represents the commitment of Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth to reach out to young people across all corners of the island of Ireland. These scholarships offer a real incentive for students in Northern Ireland to undertake Theology, bringing with them a rich experience.“

The Cardinal Tomas Ó Fiaich Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of three A-levels only, with a minimum requirement of 2 ‘A’ and 1 ‘B’ grades.  Applicants must meet SPCM minimum entry requirements.
