The Vatican has this week released the details of the Lent, Holy Week and Easter schedule for Pope Francis.
Here is the schedule of papal liturgical ceremonies for March and April released by the Vatican:
6 March [Ash Wednesday] at 4.30pm: Penitential procession from Rome’s Church of St. Anselm to the Basilica of Santa Sabina for Mass with the imposition of ashes.
10 – 15 March: Lenten retreat with the Roman Curia at the Pauline Fathers’ retreat center in Ariccia, southeast of Rome.
29 March at 5.00pm: Penitential liturgy in Saint Peter’s Basilica.
30-31 March: Papal trip to Morocco.
14 April 14 [Palm Sunday] at 10.00am: Mass in Saint Peter’s Square.
18 April at 9.30am: Chrism Mass in Saint Peter’s Basilica.
19 April [Good Friday]:
- Liturgy of the Lord’s passion in Saint Peter’s Basilica at 5.00pm
- Way of the Cross at Rome’s Colosseum at 9.15pm
20 April at 8.30pm: Easter Vigil Mass in Saint Peter’s Basilica
21 April [Easter Sunday] at 10.00am: Easter morning Mass in Saint Peter’s Square followed at noon by the pope’s blessing “Urbi et Orbi” (the city and the world) from the central balcony of Saint Peter’s Basilica.
The Vatican has not provided the time or place for Pope Francis’ celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. In previous years Pope Francis has celebrated the Mass and foot washing ritual at a prison or detention center, refugee center or rehabilitation facility. This information will be released by the Vatican closer to the time.
