Diocese of Clogher to celebrate golden jubilee of Bishop Liam Mac Daid

On Sunday 14 July next, Bishop Liam MacDaid, Bishop Emeritus of Clogher, will mark the 50th anniversary of his ordination to priesthood with a special Mass of Thanksgiving in Saint Macartan’s Cathedral, Monaghan.

A native of Bundoran, Co Donegal, on the north-western extreme of the diocese, Bishop Mac Daid was ordained at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth on 15 June 1969. He served as Bishop of Clogher from July 2010 until his retirement on health grounds in October 2016.

Commenting on the jubilee Mass, Dr Gary Carville, Communications Director of Clogher Diocese said, “Bishop MacDaid has served the people of the diocese as a teacher, a leader in the field of education, as a diocesan official and as bishop. Above all, he has served countless people as a priest and it is this priestly ministry which the people of the diocese and his many friends will celebrate and give thanks for on the 14 July.”

The Diocese of Clogher encompasses all of Co Monaghan, most of Fermanagh and portions of Tyrone, Donegal, Louth and Cavan.  It has a Catholic population of 88,000, across 37 parishes, which are served by 58 priests and 1 deacon. There are 85 churches in the diocese.  Bishop Larry Duffy is the Bishop of Clogher since 10 February 2019. Saint Macartan is the patron saint of the diocese.
