On 26 January last, His Excellency Bishop Mariano Crociata, President of the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the European Union (COMECE), had an audience with Pope Francis. Their discussions encompassed various topics including European integration, the EU institutions, peace, the recently agreed EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, and the role of youth in our societies amongst other topics.
A report on the interview, by the Italian news agency AgenSIR, referenced Bishop Crociata raising the upcoming election of members to a new European Parliament, wherein he said, “It is necessary to overcome partisan selfishness; the June vote ‘is a critical step’; the possibility of reaching ‘a majority capable of looking seriously at the future of the EU’ is being tested”.
