Last week, Trocáire welcomed Salome Mumba to Ireland for a special visit during their Lenten Appeal. Salome is Trocáire’s Irrigation and Natural Resource Management Officer in Malawi.
Salome spoke to secondary students across Ireland including Kinsale, Maynooth and Dublin and visited Parishes in Wilton in Cork and Cabra in Dublin. Salome gave an informative presentation on her work on supports for people who have been affected by climate change, to students who are studying Catholic Social Teaching and to the Irish Bishops’ Conference staff in Maynooth. She also spoke at a wonderful interactive event on Thursday night in UCD chaplaincy centre, where students and local Parish members had an opportunity to discuss Trócaire’s vital work. This was topped off by a trip to RTÉ studios in Montrose, Dublin, to participate in a televised celebration of Mass with Bishop Paul Dempsey and the Achonry Diocese choir.
Trócaire’s Church Outreach Officer, Anna Keegan, said, “It has been a busy but very enjoyable week for all of us here in Trócaire. Everywhere we went Salome received a warm welcome from the Irish people. To hear her first-hand account of the impacts of climate change on the communities in Malawi, and the solutions that Trócaire is working on, was impactful and gave many of us hope for the future. I, like many, was taken by the considered and creative process that Salome and her colleagues in Malawi take when working with the local community.”
Ms Keegan continued, “Taking time to talk to the community and make decisions based on the feedback is in keeping with Trócaire’s values of solidarity and participation. Furthermore, showing in action, many of the core values of Catholic Social Teaching. We wish Salome the best of luck as she travels to our colleagues in Northern Ireland to continue her promotion of our good works. Trocáire invites everyone, in person or online, to its Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth, Annual Lent Lecture which takes place on Tuesday 5 March 2024 at 7.00pm. This year’s speaker is Rev Agbonkhianmeghe Orobator, SJ, the Dean of Theology at Santa Clara University who will be speaking on the theme: ‘Climate Justice and Catholic Social Teaching: “Everything is connected…No one is saved alone” (Laudate Deum, 19).’
