“Never has the use of violence brought peace in its wake. War begets war, violence begets violence” – Pope Francis, Angelus, 1 September, 2013.
On 11 May, Mass was celebrated in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh, by the Primate of All Ireland Archbishop Eamon Martin. The sacrifice of the Mass was offered in solidarity with the people of the Holy Land. Members of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, who had gathered in Armagh, attended this Mass and published the following statement:
“As our hearts ache for all the people of the Middle East, we appeal to the international community to redouble its efforts in securing a just and lasting peace.
“We pray for and urge restraint on all sides and plea for an immediate ceasefire and the release of all hostages.
“May the Holy Spirit touch the hearts of adversaries and bless their work in seeking a peaceful resolution where ‘nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore’ (Is. 2:4).
“As people of faith, may we never become desensitised to the plight of the most vulnerable: the young, the elderly, the hungry, and displaced, but reach out in compassion, support, and assistance.
“Trusting in the strength of prayer, we seek the intercession of Our Lady Queen of Palestine, the dispenser of grace, that Jesus, Prince of Peace, and Son of Eternal Justice will shine the light of peace across all lines of division and restore God’s kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.”
