Intercom magazine, the pastoral and liturgical resource of the Irish Catholic Bishop’s Conference, is now in its 54th year of publication.
Contributors to Intercom, which is also available online through a subscription, provide resources to support liturgical preparation thanks to experts such as Father Patrick Jones, Sister Moira Bergin, Father John Byrne OSA, naturalist Eanna ni Lamhna, Father Martin McNamara MSC, and liturgist Maria Hall. These are accompanied by articles, interviews and reports as well as updates from the quarterly meetings of the Bishops’ Conference. These updates help to illustrate the scope and impact of the many agencies of the Bishops, from the Catholic care marriage service Accord, concerning emigrants and immigrants, on medical ethics including pro-life matters, to education. There are also regular features on the cultural life, music and the arts, of the domestic and global church throughout the liturgical year.
A presider’s page for each week and special feasts with homiletic material from writers both home and abroad, prayers of the faithful and material for parish newsletters is one of the most popular and widely used sections of the magazine.
Features from Vatican News, in-depth reports from David O’ Hare of the overseas development agency Trócaire on its vital work in conflict and emergency disaster zones, as well as articles on the ministry and outreach of a wide variety of chaplaincies and regular articles on prayer and spirituality from Sister Niamh Galvin OP and other contributors from the contemplative life all make for a diverse and useful blend of content to assist in parish and school settings. Each issue specifically highlights issues for primary and post-primary schools.
Fresh resources by way of newly published books, films and exhibitions are assessed and recommended by a regular panel of reviewers including Mary Adamson, Father John Cullen and others. Authors dealing with topical and relevant pastoral, liturgical and biographical topics are prioritised.
Intercom is very much a product of teamwork that includes its Editorial Advisory Board, chaired by Mrs Finola Bruton, and the quarterly meetings of the Catholic Communications Council chaired by Archbishop Eamon Martin. The magazine has been creatively designed and type-set for many years by Colette Dower of Veritas. The assistant to the editor is Chah Garde.
As a Catholic pastoral and liturgical resource, Intercom is the only magazine of its kind in Ireland and is published ten times throughout the year with double issues in July/August and December/January.
