Pope Francis appoints Archbishop Michael Crotty as new ambassador to Nigeria

On 16 July, Pope Francis transferred Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, who has been serving as Apostolic Nuncio in Burkina Faso and Niger to the West African nation of Nigeria.

As the former nuncio to the neighbouring countries, the Irish Church diplomat, originally from the Diocese of Cloyne, has extensive experience in the region.

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and has its second-largest Catholic population, after the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Archbishop Crotty has been serving in the diplomatic service of the Holy See since 2001.  His previous appointments include: Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Kenya, Nairobi, and Deputy Head of Mission of the Permanent Observer Mission of the Holy See to UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme) and UN-HABITAT (United Nations Human Settlements Programme).  Archbishop Crotty also served as First Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciature in Canada, Ottawa, First Secretary of the Apostolic Nunciatures in Iraq (Baghdad) and Jordan (Amman), Official of the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State in the Vatican, and First Counsellor of the Apostolic Nunciature in Spain, Madrid.

Archbishop Crotty was born on 26 March 1970 and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Cloyne on 3 July 1994.
