Pastoral ministry course empowers priests and religious to minister in Ireland

In collaboration with the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Spiritan Mission Ireland has developed a specialised course for incoming pastoral ministry workers.  This tailored programme is designed to support the integration and orientation of new pastoral workers, preparing them for effective ministry in parishes and congregational settings.  The course is fully residential and is hosted at the Spiritan Retreat and Spirituality Centre in Ardbracan, Navan, Co Meath.

Commenting on this pastoral ministry course, Father Willie Purcell (pictured with paticipants who just completed the course), one of the course presenters and member of the Council for Migrants of the Bishops’ Conference, said, “This course brings together pastoral ministers from across the globe, who will be serving in parishes, religious communities, and specialised ministries in Ireland.  We are truly fortunate to have our brothers and sisters from diverse backgrounds contributing their pastoral experiences, talents, expertise, and cultural richness to our local communities.”

This residential course, which recently concluded, was held in two five-day sessions over consecutive weeks: from 28 August to 1 September, and from 4 to 8 September.  The course offers comprehensive modules on the structure of the Catholic Church, including the Bishops’ Conference and the Association of Missionaries and Religious in Ireland.  It also covers diocesan and parish settings, along with an introduction to key liturgical policies and practices established by the Bishops’ Conference, specifically related to ministry in Ireland.

Upon completing the course, participants will receive a comprehensive introduction to life in Ireland, equipping them to adapt to their new environment, confidently fulfill their pastoral responsibilities, and ensure their ministry aligns with the needs of those they serve.  The course offers valuable insights into approaches to ministry within the Irish context, and participants will explore key issues surrounding liturgy and spirituality in pastoral settings.  Additionally, they will engage with a range of topics including inter and cross-cultural communication, change management, conflict resolution, authority, leadership, active listening, collaboration, and personal well-being.  The programme also provides a broad overview of Ireland’s socio-economic, political, and cultural landscape, along with its rich history.

Candidates are awarded a certificate of training from the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church in Ireland, confirming their full compliance with the safeguarding protocols required for ministry in Ireland.  This comprehensive two-day training ensures that participants meet all safeguarding standards necessary for pastoral ministry.
