As the Vatican and Rome prepare for the 2025 Jubilee Year, the Irish religious community in Rome is also preparing for a four-year period of significant anniversaries, culminating in 2029 with the bicentenary of Catholic Emancipation and the centenary of diplomatic relations between Ireland and the Holy See.
To mark the occasion, the Embassy of Ireland to the Holy See has worked with the community, as well as a graphic designer and videographer, to put together the ‘Ireland in Rome – Religious and Historical Connections’ Map (pictured above). The map covers 12 religious sites in Rome which have strong and enduring links to Ireland. The printed copy contains a map with short informational paragraphs about each site. It also contains a QR code which links to a page on the Ireland.ie website, where more detailed information is available, along with an audio version, and five short films which introduce the viewer to the main ‘Irish Houses’ in Rome.
The map was launched at an event at the Ambassador’s official residence on 6 December by Minister of State for Diaspora, Mr Seán Fleming TD.
The Embassy is grateful to the Rectors of the houses who kindly took part in the filming and the wider community of Irish Religious in Rome who were a great support in putting together the map.
