Archbishop Martin calls for prayers for cardinals during conclave

8 May, 2025 | Bishops, Church, News, Pope, World

This week marked the beginning of conclave on 7 May, where 133 cardinal-electors from across the globe gathered in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican to choose the successor to Saint Peter, and the 267th pope.

The primate of All Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh has invited the faithful on the island of Ireland to pray to the Holy Spirit to guide the cardinals in their discernment.

Archbishop Martin said: “I ask you, as the conclave begins today, to join me in prayer:
‘O God, eternal shepherd, who govern your flock with unfailing care, grant in your boundless fatherly love a pastor for your Church who will please you by his holiness and to us show watchful care.’”

The term “Conclave” comes from two Latin words: cum (with) and clavis (key).  In Church terminology, it designates both the secluded place where the papal election is held, and the body of Cardinals convened there to elect the new Pope. (source:vaticannews.va)
