As part of the celebrations of the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars in Ireland, the Irish Capuchin Archives in conjunction with the Mícheál Ó Cléirigh Institute (UCD) will hold a one day conference in Saint Mary of the Angels, Church Street, Dublin 7 on Saturday 27 February from 10.30am to 5.30pm.
This commemorative conference will be a public history event and it is expected to attract a diverse audience interested in the deep connection between the Capuchin Friars and key events in Irish history during the past four centuries.
Topics and speakers will include:
- Dr John McCafferty (UCD) Fr Nicholas Archbold and the early Irish Capuchins in Dublin
- Father Mícheál Mac Craith OFM (Collegio San Isidoro) Friar Nugent and the Franciscans: a not so friendly rivalry.
- Dr John Borgonovo (UCC) The Exile, Death, and Repatriation of Father Dominic O’Connor, 1922-1958.
- Dr Conor Mulvagh (UCD) Father Columbus Murphy and his personal narrative on the 1916 Rising.
- Sonya Perkins (Irish Arts Review) Where and what is Ireland? – Father Senan Moynihan and Capuchin Annual
- Ruth Sheehy (TCD) The Illustrations of Richard King for the Capuchin Annual, 1940-72.
- Father Kieran Shorten OFM Cap. (Church Street Friary) A history of Irish Capuchin missionary work in Africa.
