Bishop Brendan Kelly, Bishop of Achonry is leading pilgrims from the Diocese of Achonry on a three-day pilgrimage to Lough Derg beginning today Monday 26 June and ending on Wednesday 29 June.
The thee-day pilgrimage follows a 1000-year-old pattern of prayer. Over the course of the three days, pilgrims will take part in various spiritual activities, including fasting on one simple meal a day, barefoot walking, a 24 hour vigil, and the completion of nine ‘Station prayers’ at various locations on the island. Pilgrims in this Jubilee Year of Mercy will also have the opportunity to pass through the Holy Door of Mercy on the island.
14,000 pilgrims visit Lough Derg every season from May to September and since the late 1800’s the number is estimated to be over two million.
