15 Nov, 2016 | News

The Pontifical Irish College, Rome, will host a special conference on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 November to coincide with the conclusion of Pope Francis’ Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy.

On Friday evening Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation will share insights from his unique vantage point as the one tasked by Pope Francis to oversee the Extraordinary Jubilee Year. Her Excellency Emma Madigan, Ambassador of Ireland to the Holy See, will chair this part of the conference.

On Saturday morning, theologian Dr Mary McCaughey will speak on mercy and our understanding of God. Also on Saturday, Fr Roberto Cherubini of the Community of Sant’Egidio will speak about merciful outreach to the poor, drawing on his ministry to the poor in Rome.

The conference will conclude with celebration of Mass in the chapel of the Irish College.

A special invitation is extended to members of the Irish community in Rome to be part of this special event.

Founded in 1628, the Pontifical Irish College is home to 60 students, with half coming from Ireland and the others representing many different nations. The College organises different events for the Irish and for the wider international community in Rome.  Over thirty couples from Ireland celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage at the College last year; young people are prepared for the Sacraments of First Penance, First Communion and Confirmation.  Conferences and courses are hosted during the Summer months on different aspects of religion, safeguarding, ongoing faith formation and culture.

Archbishop Eamon Martin, Catholic Archbishop of Armagh, and Archbishop John McDowell, Church of Ireland Archbishop of Armagh reflect together on the theme for this year's Week of Prayer of Christian Unity - 'Do you believe this?'
As we embark on this Jubilee year, Pope Francis reminds us of an urgent need: the right to education for all children and youth.

Pope Francis -
“Today we’re experiencing an “educational catastrophe.” This is no exaggeration. Due to wars, migration, and poverty, some 250 million boys and girls lack education.

All children and youth have the right to go to school, regardless of their immigration status.

Education is a hope for everyone – it can save migrants and refugees from discrimination, criminal networks, and exploitation…. So many minors are exploited! It can help them integrate into the communities who host them.
Education opens the doors to a better future. In this way, migrants and refugees can contribute to society, either in their new country or in their country of origin, should they decide to return.

And let’s never forget that whoever welcomes the foreigner, welcomes Jesus Christ.

Let us pray for migrants, refugees and those affected by war, that their right to an education, which is necessary to build a more human world, might always be respected.”
