Bishop Browne commissions 25 lay people as pastoral leaders for Kerry

19 Feb, 2025 | Bishops, Church, News

On 9 February, Bishop Ray Browne, Bishop of Kerry, commissioned 25 people as pastoral leaders at Saint Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney, Co Kerry.  Welcoming this new ministry in the diocese, Bishop Browne remarked, “The Church of the future will be different – not better or worse, just different.”

The ministry of pastoral leader is a new ministry in the Diocese of Kerry. It involves the co-ordination and support of pastoral ministry in parishes and pastoral areas.  The volunteer pastoral leaders will work with clergy, parish secretaries and all those involved in parish ministry in a complementary role.  Pastoral leaders will be commissioned for three years.

Over the past two years, newly commissioned pastoral leaders have participated in a comprehensive formation programme at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.  This programme has provided participants with a valuable opportunity to deepen their faith and enhance their pastoral skills.  In their new roles, they will take on responsibilities that were traditionally carried out by priests, such as bringing Holy Communion to the housebound and assisting schools in preparing students for the Sacraments.
