Bishop Coll offers prayers of thanksgiving to Dominicans in Kilkenny

Last week, the Dominican Order celebrated 800 years of ministry in Kilkenny.  To mark this significant milestone, Bishop Niall Coll of Ossory (pictured above) stated, “We honour the long and distinguished Dominican presence here in Kilkenny, recalling the legacy of Saint Dominic, born around 1170 in Spain.  It is from his witness, teaching, and ministry that the Dominican Order has developed over the centuries.  The Dominicans, known as the ‘Order of Friars Preachers,’ were originally called to the work of ‘preaching and the salvation of souls.’”

Bishop Coll continued, “I want to emphasise that the Dominican charisms of preaching, reaching out to people where they are, and deep scholarship in the Bible, philosophy, and theology, are more important today than ever before.  Preachers, teachers, and evangelisers—those Pope Francis constantly reminds us are so needed are essential to renewing the people of God, helping us to open our eyes to the beauty of Christ, and to recognise the importance of the Gospel and the faith in Jesus Christ that it points to.”

“On behalf of the people, clergy, and religious of the Diocese of Ossory, I offer my congratulations to the Dominican priests, brothers, and lay members on 800 years of service to the people of Kilkenny.  Your prayer, preaching, and community service have inspired generations.  Your promotion of personal and family prayer, especially the Rosary, has deepened devotion to Mary, the Mother of God, and brought her presence alive in our community.”

Bishop Coll concluded, “May the Lord continue to bless the Dominican friars here at the Black Abbey and all the faithful who worship with you.  In this 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope, as Catholics around the world celebrate their faith, let us pray with renewed fervour that the work of ‘preaching and the salvation of souls’ will continue to endure in Kilkenny for many more centuries to come.”
