On Sunday, March 30th, Bishop Kevin Doran was officially installed as the Bishop of Achonry during a special liturgy held for the Fourth Sunday of Lent, also known as Laetare Sunday (‘Joyous Sunday’). The ceremony, which took place at the Cathedral of the Annunciation and Saint Nathy, Ballaghaderreen, marks a significant moment in the history of both dioceses as they unite “in persona episcopi” (in the person of the Bishop). This union brings together the two dioceses under Bishop Doran’s leadership, reflecting a new chapter in their shared faith journey.
The installation Mass was celebrated by Bishop Doran, with His Excellency Archbishop Luis Mariano Montemayor, Papal Nuncio to Ireland, Archbishop Francis Duffy, and Bishop Michael Duignan serving as principal concelebrants. Bishop Doran’s homily during the service focused on the themes of unity, faith, and the mission of the Church in contemporary society.
In his homily, Bishop Doran reflected on the deep historical and spiritual connections between the Diocese of Achonry and the Diocese of Elphin. He drew particular attention to the story of Saint Attracta, an early Christian woman associated with the region, whose determination to follow her calling despite resistance mirrored the journey of faith both dioceses are now embarking on together.
Bishop Doran highlighted the importance of belonging to the Church as part of the “one People of God,” and emphasised that this unity is grounded in both history and a shared mission for the future. He also spoke of the need for ongoing formation and for making parishes communities of welcome, where all members are encouraged to live as disciples of Jesus Christ.
As the dioceses unite, Bishop Doran stressed the necessity of reviewing existing structures to ensure they meet the needs of the 21st century. He reminded the congregation that the Church’s mission is not just about maintaining traditions but about reaching out to the margins, forming lifelong disciples, and ensuring active involvement of all, especially young adults, in the liturgical and pastoral life of the Church.
