Elphin diocese to host Triduum in honour of Our Lady of Fatima this weekend

A special triduum, a liturgy or devotion which is celebrated over three days, in honour of Our Lady of Fatima will take place in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Sligo, in the Diocese of Elphin, this weekend, from Friday 11 August to Sunday 13 August. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady in Fatima, Portugal.

Dominican priest Father John Walsh OP will be guest preacher during the Triduum. Father Walsh is the Irish Dominican Province’s Promoter of the Holy Rosary. Devotion to Mary is an important aspect of Dominican spirituality. The origin of the Holy Rosary is attributed to Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican Order, who received the prayer himself through an apparition of Mary.

The triduum will begin at 10.30am on Friday morning with a Solemn Procession of the statue of Our Lady of Fatima, followed by Mass in Sligo Cathedral celebrated by Father Walsh. Mass will be celebrated each morning during the Triduum at 8.00am and 10.30am and in the evening at 7.00pm on Friday and 7.30pm on Saturday. Mass and Confession will also be offered at various times throughout the three days.

Over the weekend Father Walsh will also lead a meditated prayer of the Rosary each day, at 6.30pm on both the Friday and Sunday, and at 7.00pm on Saturday. The final Mass of the triduum will be celebrated at 7.00pm on Sunday evening, followed by the Sacrament of Confession.

Between 13 May and 13 October of 1917 three shepherd children, Lucia Santos and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto, reported visions of the Virgin Mary. Pope Francis visited Fatima in May during which the Holy Father canonised the young shepherds Jacinta and Francisco Marto.
