During the Angelus on 22 October 2017, Pope Francis announced that October 2019 will be “Extraordinary Missionary Month”.  The theme of the Extraordinary Missionary Month is “Baptised and Sent: the Church of Christ on Mission in the World”.

The official website for the Extraordinary Missionary Month October 2019 was launched last Friday, 30 November marking the 100th anniversary of the promulgation of the Apostolic Letter, Maximum Illud, by Pope Benedict XV, which gave new energy to the missionary responsibility of proclaiming the Gospel in the World.

Archbishop Kieran O’Reilly SMA, chair of the Bishops’ Conference National Mission Council welcomed the launch of the website along with the preparations for Extraordinary Missionary Month 2019.  Archbishop O’Reilly said, “I hope that the Extraordinary Missionary Month will offer the opportunity for both a renewal and a renewed spirit of activity in the Church’s missionary calling, which is at the heart of our identity.”

Also welcoming the initiative, Father Martin Kelly CSsp, director of World Missions Ireland, expressed hope that “Extraordinary Missionary Month October 2019 will lead to the whole Church living the joy of mission and being missionary in its nature.”
