Sister Patricia Murray, a Loreto Sister from the Irish Province, has been appointed by Pope Francis as a Consultor to the Pontifical Council for Culture. She is currently executive director of the International Union of Superiors General (the organization of leadership of women’s religious institutes) based in Rome.

Sister Murray’s appointment as Consultor is for a term of five years during which she will be invited to attend the meetings of the Pontifical Council for Culture and offer inputs on matters being considered.

The Pontifical Council for Culture traces its origins back to the Second Vatican Council and is a response to the need for the Church to continually engage with the cultures of the world.

Sister Murray has worked in peace building in Ireland for many years. Later she was the founding executive director of Solidarity with South Sudan, fostering the collaboration of more than a hundred religious orders working to rebuild the educational, medical, agricultural and pastoral infrastructure of the newly independent South Sudan.

In her current role as executive director of the International Union of Superiors General she is responsible for fostering networking and solidarity among the Women Religious of the world.
