New Apostolic Nuncio to Kuwait and Qatar congratulated by his home diocese of Killaloe

Bishop Fintan said, “I warmly congratulate Archbishop Eugene on his appointment as Nuncio to Kuwait and Qatar.  Archbishop Eugene has always kept close links with the Diocese of Killaloe and I look forward to his annual visits when he returns home to visit family and friends in Scarriff in East Clare.  He is warmly remembered in the Cathedral parish in Ennis from the time he ministered there after ordination.  Every good wish and blessing to him in his new ministry and the important and good work he will do in Kuwait and Qatar.”

Archbishop Nugent was ordained a priest in Scariff on 9 July 1983 for the Diocese of Killaloe. From 2010 until 2015 he was Apostolic Nuncio in Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles as well as being Apostolic Delegate to the Comoros Islands and the island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean. On 10 January 2015, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Haiti where he worked on the reconstruction of churches following the devastating earthquake of 2010.  He will transfer to Kuwait mid-February.

A graduate in Celtic Studies form the National University of Ireland (Maynooth) and subsequently in theology and canon law at the Gregorian University in Rome, Archbishop Nugent also studied diplomacy and international relations at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome.

Having entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on July 1st, 1992 at the age of 33, he worked as secretary in the Nunciatures in Turkey, Israel and Palestine and subsequently at the Holy See Study mission in Hong Kong form 2000 until 2010.

On 13 February 2010, he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI Apostolic Nuncio and titular Archbishop of Domnach Sechnaill (Dunshaughlin).
