Father Richard Hendrick OFMCap, the well-known friar and author who is simply known as Brother Richard, was elected Provincial Minister of the Irish Capuchin Franciscans on 6 June. His election marks a significant milestone in his journey of faith and leadership within the Franciscan order. The photograph above shows Archbishop Dermot Farrell of Dublin, and Archbishop Eamon Martin of Armagh, congratulating Brother Richard following his election in Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth.

Reflecting on his new leadership role Brother Richard said, “The gathering of the friars for Chapter every three years is an observance of the Order that goes back to Saint Francis himself. It is an opportunity for the brothers to discern collectively the will of the Holy Spirit and to make decisions to support our mission as Capuchin friars to live as a Gospel brotherhood serving the Church and the World. The office of Provincial Minister is a work of service to the brothers in their mission, and I would simply ask that all who hear of the Chapter would remember us in their prayers.”

As Provincial, Brother Richard will lead a community of friars committed to ministering to the poor, caring for the environment, and nurturing spirituality. His election is being celebrated across Ireland’s Franciscan communities, and many are offering prayers for his leadership and the intentions of our Christian leaders everywhere.
Congratulations to Brother Richard on this new chapter in his ministry of faith and fraternity!
