by | 19 Apr, 2016 | News

To celebrate the 800th Jubilee of the Order of Preachers, the Irish Dominican friars are planning a pilgrimage to Italy to visit some famous Dominican sites and churches. The pilgrimage consists of three nights in Rome, one night in Siena, two nights in Florence and one day in Bologna. The pilgrimage starts on the morning of 31 July (leaving from Dublin) and finishes on the evening of 6 August (returning from Bologna). The trip will conclude with Mass celebrated at Saint Dominic’s tomb in Bologna on 6 August (the date on which St. Dominic died).

The Dominicans or Order of Preachers are celebrating 800 years since their  foundation in 1216. The Order, which was founded by Saint Dominic, was officially confirmed by Pope Honorius III who approved the Order as a body of Canons Regular on the 22 December 1216. A second papal bull, issued on 21 January 1217, recognised the newness of Dominic’s ideas and approved the foundation as an Order of Preachers. The Jubilee Year is being celebrated worldwide by Dominican friars, sisters and lay people from  7 November 2015 (The Feast of All Saints of the Order) to 21 January 2017.
