Trócaire visits Ossory to promote Lenten campaign on impact of climate change in Malawi

As part of its 2024 Lenten campaign, “Let Justice Flow like a River…” (Amos 5:24), Trócaire’s ‘Church Team’ visited the Diocese of Ossory to support events over 2 and 3 March.

Speaking of her experience, Jane Mellett, Trócaire’s Church Manager, reflected on her team’s weekend in the diocese, “On Friday evening we participated in a beautiful Taizé prayer service for young people, led by Diocesan Pastoral Worker, Gemma Mulligan (pictured addressing audience), and shared on reflections from Laudato Si– Pope Francis’ encyclical on Caring for Our Common Home.  The next day we had a fantastic coffee morning in aid of Trócaire and the launch of the Care for Our Common Home Photographic Exhibition, which will remain on display in the Cathedral parish for the next few weeks.”

Ms Mellett continued,”this exhibition features portraits of some of the brave women and men with whom Trócaire works, who are standing up for environmental justice.  These heroes are standing up for the natural world and for exploited and impoverished communities, saying ‘no’ to activities that often destroy lives, damage the environment, violate human rights and trap people into poverty.  It also includes images of activists from across the island of Ireland, who are advocating for a safer, more sustainable and just world.”

“As we continue our Lenten journey, we especially remember Malita and her family, who feature on this year’s Trócaire box.  In the Machinga district in Malawi, Malita is a strong and resilient woman, despite the challenges that she faces.  She works tirelessly in her community to improve the life of all its members.  Like all mothers, she prays for the best for her children, she wants them to have an education and opportunities for a better life.  Trócaire and its local partners are working with women like Malita to build a more just world. Happy Mother’s Day from all in Trócaire.” Ms Mellett concluded.

For the fourth Sunday of Lent, Trócaire invites everyone to look at resources, found on their website, which include sample prayers of the faithful and newsletter inserts that tell the story of some of their work in Malawi.
