Trócaire’s Lenten campaign focusses on the plight of people in Malawi ”the warm heart of Africa”

Trócaire encourages everyone to participate in this year’s Lent awareness campaign that focuses on the plight of the people of Malawi.

Anna Keegan, Trócaire Church Outreach Officer, said, “With Lent upon us, Trócaire would like to share our Church resources and details of our 2024 Lenten campaign.  In previous years, our resources have been used by parishes, schools and families.

“This year Trócaire’s campaign focus is on Malawi, located in south east Africa.  Malawi is often referred to as the warm heart of Africa.  Sadly, it is a country with high levels of poverty, where life is already a struggle for many.  Climate change is causing extreme weather events, flooding and droughts are becoming more severe and frequent.  People are losing their homes, their livelihoods and even their lives.

“In the context of our 2024 Lenten campaign, Trócaire has prepared a family resource that brings together Scripture, Laudato Sí’ and Laudato Deum.  We encourage people of faith to avail of these resources during Mass, at your parish council meeting, liturgy group or with any other active parish group.  All resources are available in English and Irish on the Trócaire website by clicking here  Also, in the resources, Trócaire has highlighted the work for water justice as a response to the effects of climate change.”

Ms Keegan continued, “In our ‘Let justice flow like a river’ resource, each Sunday is laid out in an accessible format so that each parish can get involved in the Trócaire campaign.  For example, on the first Sunday of Lent: ‘I set my bow in the clouds to serve as a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.’ (Genesis 9:13).”

Ms Keegan concluded, “Malawi is one of the least developed countries in the world and has been badly affected by climate change.  The Trócaire 2024 Lenten campaign focuses on Malita and her family, in the Machinga district, who must make a one-hour trip up to five times a day to access clean water.  I invite everyone to support Trócaire in helping communities develop sustainable access to clean, safe and reliable water supplies by taking home a Trócaire box today and/or going to: www.trocaire.org.”
